Silver Linings

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!

Hope you all had fun bringing in the new year and are feeling good and positive for the new year ahead!

So today is the first day of 2015 and I managed to get up and out and go for a Parkrun!!!

Now my usual way of thinking is to look at all the negatives – so I could waffle on about how bad a run it was and how slow I went etc etc, but no one wants to read about me whinging and berating myself – there are people suffering a lot worse then a bad park run!!!

Instead, as a New Years resolution, I’m going to try and look for the silver linings in my efforts and not immediately dwell on what went wrong! So here are the silver linings…

1. I woke up!!! Big plus there in itself! I am relatively happy and healthy (give or take a few stomach issues!) and I was surrounded by my beautiful family – and I mean this literally as we stayed at my in-laws for New Years Eve and so the kids were asleep on a mattress on the floor next to us!!! Haha!!! 😄

2. This counts towards my first Janathon!!! Of which I am very proud to be a participate and I just hope I can do well.  If you fancy giving yourself some motivation to get exercising this month – it’s not too late, you can still sign up until the 7th Jan! For more incentive, there are prizes to be won!!!

3. I wore my Stephen Amell F&@k Cancer T-shirt!!! Very cool T-shirt, bought for a worthy cause and I feel rather privileged to be wearing one! Stephen Amell is an amazing actor, charity supporter and father/husband – plus as an aside is in a fab series called Arrow. I am happily married women, but I think it’s always good to appreciate beautiful things… ;-P

4. I cleaned my trainers – this may be a small thing, but I did bring home most of Avery Hill Park on the sole of my trainers, so it’s quite a plus that I’ve already done it! I’m sure my trainers would say ‘Thank You’ if they could!

5. I saw my friend – Janathon’s Deputy Helen. It’s always lovely to see friend – especially one who is offering me so much support and encouragement at the moment! Can’t thank her enough!

6. I wrote this blog! Hoping to blog a bit more regularly – I’m not saying everyday, but at least once a week (if I can!) Also I’ve published it earlier than 11pm at night – which is a novelty for me!

7. I made it – despite the pain in my hip, slipping in the mud and considering bowing out after the 2nd lap – I finished! I didn’t give up!!! This is a good thing – and what I need to focus on and not that it was my worst Parkrun time so far – and also remember it was excessively muddy/slippery and I haven’t been running as often as I usually do due to a poorly November/December!

It really was muddy - More Evidence!!!

8. Also need to take into consideration it may be the 1st January – but it’s not the first exercise I’ve done this week! I managed 10.66km on Monday (walking & running) with my greatest motivator Helen and on Wednesday I walked quite a distance round High Elms with the family – occasionally carrying the Pink One and the Blue One (surely that counts as weight training!)

9. It’s all good preparation for my first official 10km run on the 18th Jan at the Olympic park (should’ve been Hyde Park, but there was a venue change!)

So feeling positive – I celebrated with a hot shower, a cup of tea and a yummy sarnie made by my fabulous hubby (and some chocolate)!!! I’m so rock ‘n’ roll!

Mmmmm, Yum! Yum!!!
Mmmmm, Yum! Yum!!!

Great start to the new year – so let’s try and keep up the positive thinking! Until next time, have a wonderful day!!! 😊 xxx

On a Cold and Frosty Morning

When I am In a good frame of mind, I walk around seeing things and imagining how good a photo they would make, today I got to take some photos of a beautiful and frosty world. As I walked to meet my lovely friend Helen of HelsBels Blog fame. I thought I would share some of my favourite images that I took today, I am just an amateur photographer who likes to take, what I hope are, interesting photos!

Hope you enjoyed these selection of photos! 🙂 xxx

Let it Go! Let it Go!… Mmmmmm, Cake!!!

What I have to let go is that I wanted to do a Scooby Doo cake for my daughter’s 5th birthday but she insisted she wanted a Frozen themed cake and so Elsa it was!!!

I promised in my previous Blog ‘…No, I’m the Other Sister!‘ that I’d share the making of this cake and I have also had approval from Shawna McGreevy of McGreevy Cakes who’s Elsa cake was the inspiration for my attempt at this cake, which means a lot to me!

I also had lots of guidance from the Cake Guru that is my sister Sarah of Caking it – and the bespoke cake board and support I used was from Fabricaking it. The board was a semi circle as it was also my niece’s birthday and sister did an Anna creation which we then presented together.

Below are the photos of each stage of this cake – this was a dairy free chocolate sponge with Biscoff Spread! Enjoy!

Hope you enjoyed this blog! My daughter was very happy with the cake which is the main thing and I was pleased with what I had achieved – and it tasted good too!!! 🙂 xxx

Do it with a Friend…

…or in my case two friends, and for all you rude minded people I obviously mean go for a run!

This will only be a short blog, but I felt compelled to share this with you all, I’ve not been running since 13th September, for numerous reasons – mainly stomach issues, very annoying, and this evening I went for the first time since then and I was really apprehensive that my fitness and my ability to run would be gone after all that down time!

Instead, to my surprise, it was absolutely amazing and I feel so good having gone out there and done it. But what made this such a good run and made me feel so much better is I went with two good friends – who I am so thankful for, able to chat with them and we discussed things and before we knew it we’d done 5km! It was just fantastic, made my body feel good and really helped clear my mind!

So if you’ve not been running for a while, and like I was, worried about getting out there again – try and find a friend (or if you’re lucky like I was) two friends to come with you and get back out there! You’ll be so glad you did! 🙂 xxx

…”No, I’m the other sister…!!!”

A bit of an update!

Just to set the scene – I am the baby of four children. I have two older brothers and one older sister – you note how I’m telling you now I am the youngest as my sister and I often get “which one of you is older?” – never good for my pride!!! 😛

I’m sure I’ll discuss my wonderful brothers in future blogs, but in this I would like to introduce my amazing sister Sarah King.

Between my sister and I, I am the organised one and the one who creates fabulous spreadsheets in Excel (so exciting, I know!). I have a pretty good ability for drawing but my sister’s drawing ability is exceptional and puts mine in the shade – and this is only the start of it!

My sister is one ridiculously talented cake maker – when I say this you can’t possibly understand how talented unless you go and visit her pages – www.cakingit.co.uk – www.facebook.com/cakingit

Below are a couple of her cakes that I love;

Sarah's CakesBut not only is she phenomenal at making cake – she also really good at imparting this knowledge to others to help them make their own cakes – including me! Below are the cakes I’ve made for my kids with the excellent guidance of my sister!

The Pink One wants a Frozen themed cake for her 5th birthday this month – so watch this space…

So hopefully you have been watching this space and here it is my Elsa Cake, inspired by McGreevy Cakes, for my daughter’s 5th Birthday. Obviously help and guidance provided by my sister and the whole thing is supported on a Fabricaking it stand!

Hoping to do a Blog on this cake as I took photos every step of the way – so will share with you all soon!

The Blue One’s Birthday isn’t until February but already considering a Superhero theme or possibly Scooby Doo – but we’ll see!

Enjoy viewing her cakes (and mine!) and if you need one made – please do contact her by the links to her sites. If you’re an amateur baker yourself Caking it has released Fabricaking it and they provide support structures for your cakes – Standard Kits, Multifunctional and Bespoke.

So, what’s with the title of this blog? Well when we’re at family parties and there are friends there, I have regularly been asked “Are you the sister who makes cakes?” and my response “…No, I’m the other sister!”

I’m exceptionally proud of my sister so I don’t mind being the other one! 🙂 xxx

Pet Peeves

A bit of fun for the weekend! Thought I would let you know a bit more about me and share some of my pet peeves! Those little things in life that make you grit your teeth, roll your eyes and sigh! I was also thinking this could be an interactive Post and you could tell me some of your pet peeves! Read, laugh, enjoy and then share!!! 😛

1. Someone chewing nosily or making snuffly noises when they eat!

2. When you’re in the car and someone forces their way out in front of you and then has the audacity to thank you! “It’s not like you gave me a choice sunshine!!!” On the flip side of that, those people that you make the effort to let out and they don’t say thank you!!! “No, really, you’re welcome!!!”

3. The song “You’re so Vain” as sung by Carly Simon – because she sings “Because I bet you think this song is about you, don’t you?” – but it about them!!! Also, she sings “Ap-preee-cot” it’s “Apricot”

4. When you ask someone to come and help you with something, or explain something to you and they say “Oh, but that’s easy” – if it was easy to me would I be asking for your help!?!

5. When my daughter starts a sentence with “I was just…” – I’ve asked you to do something, please do it…!!!

This will do for now, I am sure I’ll think of some more – so will probably update this post from time to time… 🙂 xxx

Taking up Running – First item on the Shopping List: Trainers

I was exceptionally lucky that my big brother had taken up running some time before me (actually for his Christmas present 2013 he requested, and I bought him a voucher to pay for a running course!) and gave me the good advice of getting a decent pair of trainers and how to go about it – if you get the wrong trainers it could put you off running before you’ve even properly started.

Not only did my lovely brother give me this great advice, but he also accompanied me to get my trainers – some of you may not have someone to go with you to get your trainers so this post is dedicated to you and I hope it helps!

The store we went to was the Run & Become store (http://www.runandbecome.com/Home) based in London near Victoria Station. Once we were there I was met by one of their lovely staff who gave me all her attention. I had to stand and then do an interesting squat, I presume, to see whether my ankles turn out and I’m sure other things. I was then given a pair of trainers, had to roll up my jeans so my ankles could be seen, fantastic look I can tell you, and asked to run a short distance up and down outside the store so she could see my running style – after which she bought out various trainers for me to try.

At this point in my running journey I was informed I needed a Neutral trainer – I was told I ran really naturally which I was very surprised at as I hadn’t run since school and I felt like I was running like Phoebe in Friends!!! I can see it now, legs and arms flailing!!!

I tried each pair of trainers on and then had to run again in each one to see which I found the most comfortable and the ones she thought I ran best in – I decided on a lovely pair of Brooks Ghosts, ironically my brother ended up with the male version of the same trainer that day too!

They cost me £105 – but were the most comfortable piece of footwear I have ever owned, I loved them immediately! Well worth every penny!

Check out the trainers - Brooks Ghosts

I then started my running using my Couch to 5k app – which I’ll blog about soon – about 8-9 weeks into my running I started to find I would get a pain on the inside of my left ankle when I was starting to running solidly for 20 minutes at time, then my right ankle got in on the act too, it hurt so much I’d have to walk, so my brother sensibly suggestion I pay another visit to Run and Become.

This is exactly what I did. This time we got to the shop a bit later so had to take number and wait to be called, but it was still very calm and my number was soon called and I was given the same amount of attention as before. I explained my situation and I was asked to do the same squat as the first time and was presented with a couple of pairs of trainers to try, this time I chose a pair of Saucony Guide 7s, which have an 8mm heel to toe offset, which to be honest I have no clue what that means, but I can honestly say the ache in my ankle started to disappear immediately.

The amazing thing for me though was that Run and Become just exchanged my trainers – even though I’d used my initial trainers for 9 weeks. Though I have to admit at the time I felt quite emotional about handing over my first pair of running trainers, it was like saying “Goodbye” to an old friend and I did have some feelings of guilt of just leaving them behind, but I now love my Saucony’s

I highly recommend Run and Become – because if you buy your trainers from Amazon for example, you definitely wouldn’t get this level of customer service and be able to exchange your trainers after being worn, it’s worth the additional cost of going to a Running Shop to have this extra peace of mind.

I hope this post has helped someone else who is just starting out on their running adventure go about selecting their trainers – as you have to protect your gym equipment! 🙂 xxx

The Pink One is Growing Up!

Well this has taken me by surprise, as I knew my Pink One was so ready for school, is that maybe I wasn’t!

I love my Pink One so very much, but have to admit that at times I do find her very difficult, not because she’s extremely naughty or has tantrums, but like most four years olds she doesn’t listen, answers back, upsets her little brother and basically drives me to distraction!

As she is five in October she is one of the older ones in her year and so I know she is ready to start and in true Pink One’s style when she started her first day in Reception on Friday, and this is a full day – no gradual build up, she walked into school with her new class without a backwards glance. That’s when I welled up and the tears I weren’t expecting came!

She may annoy me, drive me mad, make me yell – but at the same time she amazes me so much. If I could be as half as brave as her in life, not let things phase me like her, take whatever life throws me and just get on with it – I would be a much better person.

I pray that as she grows up she keeps these amazing traits as they will help her all through her life, and she will go far. Maybe she can teach me to be more like her – and I’ll try and remember theses things when she’s irritating me!

So as I type this, tomorrow is the first day of her first full week, and again the unexpected anxiety has got me, you’d think I was going to school, (shouldn’t surprise me as I have been diagnosed with a General Anxiety Disorder) but I was so ready for her to go to school and have that energy channelled I didn’t realise maybe I wasn’t ready to let her go!

Love you Pink One, I probably don’t say it enough but you make me a very proud mummy – go be amazing! 🙂 xxx
